Just as Google has made it essential for your site to be mobile-friendly, another big industry change that promises to benefit all internet users could be on the way. Luckily, just like having a responsive design, it’s probably something you’ve been considering – if not already doing – for quite some time.
Basically, if your site isn’t secure, you could be seeing a drop in search engine rank and a depreciated value in browsers. This means making use of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to switch to HTTPS as soon as possible.

First came the addition of mobile usability features to webmaster tools. Then it was announced that mobile usability will absolutely become a ranking factor in mobile searches. Then came the announcement that Google’s mobile-friendly algorithm will begin it’s rollout on April 21.
While it may or may not deserve the term that some have given it – “mobilegeddon” – the fact remains that this adjustment could have an even bigger effect than Google’s infamous Panda and Penguin algorithm changes. The impending release of Windows 10 is surrounded by rumors and, for Microsoft supporters, high hopes. More will be learned about the new OS at an event on January 21, but for now, it’s thought that Windows 10 will cater as much to enterprise PC customers as it will to personal users. The importance of mobile traffic should not be underestimated. Earlier this year, comScore reported that people spent much more time accessing digital media on smartphones and tablets than on desktops. Also, according to eMarketer, smartphone users could total 1.75 billion by the end of this year.
Most webmasters understand this trend and have taken steps to ensure their sites are mobile-friendly. But is there more you could be doing? Google’s new mobile usability feature could help determine the answer – and it might be more important than you think.
